How to Read a Construction Quotation (BOQ) — and Spot What's Missing
How to compare construction quotations, what a good BOQ includes, and the common items left out of cheap quotes.

Two quotations for the same house can differ by lakhs of rupees. Often the cheaper one simply leaves things out. Here is how to read a quotation properly.
Rate per square foot vs BOQ
A rate per square foot is quick but vague — it does not say what is included. A BOQ (bill of quantities) lists every item of work with its quantity, rate and amount. Always ask for a BOQ, or at least a detailed list of inclusions.

What a good quotation includes
- Scope: grey structure or complete, and the exact covered area
- Specifications: cement brand, steel grade, brick class, concrete mix, plaster thickness
- Item-wise quantities and rates, or a clear list of inclusions
- Payment stages linked to completed work
- Time for completion
- Warranty, and who pays for water, electricity and site security during construction
Items often missing from cheap quotes
- Boundary wall and gate
- Water tanks — underground and overhead
- Septic tank or sewer connection
- Earth filling in the plinth
- Parapet walls and roof waterproofing
- Staircase finishing and railings
- Electrical and plumbing fittings (only the pipes are included)
- Approval drawings and fees
Questions to ask every contractor
- Which steel grade and cement brand are included?
- Is the price fixed, or will it change with material prices?
- Who supervises the work, and how often?
- What happens if the work is delayed?
A clear quotation protects both you and the builder. Ask Kataria Engineering for an item-wise quotation — our rates follow our public daily material price list.
