Los Angeles Abrasion Test — Lab Manual
Los Angeles Abrasion Test: objective, apparatus, step-by-step procedure, formulas, typical values and a printable data sheet (ASTM C131 / C535).
Objective & standard
Resistance of aggregate to wear and degradation.
Standard: ASTM C131 / C535
Apparatus
- LA machine drum, steel balls (charge by grading)
- Sieves 1.70 mm
- Balance, oven
Procedure
- Prepare 5000 g of the specified grading (A, B, C or D).
- Load the drum with the sample and the steel charge.
- Rotate 500 revolutions at 30–33 rpm.
- Sieve on 1.70 mm; wash and dry the retained part and weigh.
- Loss = original − retained.
Calculations
- LA loss (%) = (W1 − W2) ÷ W1 × 100
Typical values: Bituminous wearing course ≤ 30–35 %, base ≤ 40–50 %, concrete aggregate ≤ 50 %.
