Slump Test of Fresh Concrete — Lab Manual
Slump Test of Fresh Concrete: objective, apparatus, step-by-step procedure, formulas, typical values and a printable data sheet (ASTM C143 / BS EN 12350-2).
Objective & standard
Workability of fresh concrete at the site, before placing.
Standard: ASTM C143 / BS EN 12350-2
Apparatus
- Slump cone 300 mm high (200/100 mm dia.)
- Tamping rod 16 mm × 600 mm
- Base plate, scale
Procedure
- Dampen the cone and plate; hold the cone down with the foot rests.
- Fill in 3 equal layers, rodding each 25 times through its depth.
- Strike off the top; lift the cone straight up in 5 ± 2 seconds.
- Measure the drop from the cone top to the highest point of the concrete.
- Record the type: true, shear or collapse (repeat a shear slump).
Calculations
- Slump = 300 mm − height of slumped concrete
Typical values: Footings & slabs 50–100 mm, beams/columns 75–125 mm, pumped concrete 100–150 mm.
