Which Material Should I Use?
Brick vs block, Grade 40 vs 60 steel, tiles vs marble, gypsum vs POP, uPVC vs aluminium — plain-language comparisons from our engineers.
Brick vs concrete block
- Bricks: familiar to every mason, good for small houses, heavier walls, more mortar.
- Blocks: faster to lay, fewer joints, lighter (hollow), better thermal insulation; need good quality control and a trained mason.
- Cost per sq ft of 9″ wall is similar; blocks save mortar and labour on larger buildings — compare with our brick and block calculators.
Grade 40 vs Grade 60 steel
- Grade 60 (420 MPa) is about 50% stronger than Grade 40 (280 MPa), so the design needs less steel.
- Use the grade your structural drawings specify — never replace Grade 60 with Grade 40.
- Always check bars for underweight and buy from mills with test certificates.
Tiles vs marble
- Porcelain tiles: uniform, low water absorption, quick to lay, wide choice.
- Local marble: natural look, can be polished again after years, cheaper types (Ziarat, Sunny) are affordable; stains easily in kitchens.
- Use porcelain/granite in kitchens and bathrooms, marble in lounges and stairs.
Gypsum vs POP false ceiling
- Gypsum board: faster, cleaner, fewer cracks, flat or simple designs.
- POP: any curve or moulding, but more cracking and longer work.
- Both need a steel frame and a leak-free roof above.
uPVC vs aluminium windows
- uPVC double glazed: best sound and heat insulation, no rust, costs more.
- Aluminium sliding: cheaper, slimmer frames, less airtight.
- In AJK summers and noisy roads, uPVC saves electricity and noise.
Grey structure vs complete contract
- Grey only: you buy and manage finishing yourself — cheaper on paper, more time and risk.
- Complete: one company, one price, one timeline and one responsibility.
- See our guide on grey vs complete construction.
