Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) — Lab Manual

Aggregate Impact Value (AIV): objective, apparatus, step-by-step procedure, formulas, typical values and a printable data sheet (BS 812-112).

Objective & standard

Toughness of coarse aggregate against sudden impact.

Standard: BS 812-112

Apparatus

  • AIV machine 13.5–14 kg hammer, 380 mm drop
  • Cup 102 mm dia.
  • Sieves 14, 10 and 2.36 mm
  • Tamping rod, balance

Procedure

  1. Take aggregate passing 14 mm and retained on 10 mm, oven dry.
  2. Fill the measure in 3 layers × 25 tamps; weigh (A).
  3. Place in the cup and give 15 blows.
  4. Sieve on 2.36 mm and weigh the fines passing (B).
  5. Average two tests.

Calculations

  • AIV = B ÷ A × 100

Typical values: ≤ 10 % exceptionally strong, 10–20 % strong, 20–30 % satisfactory; wearing course ≤ 30 %.
