SAFE: your first 30 minutes

Quick-start SAFE guide for civil engineering students: design an isolated or raft footing in 30 minutes, step by step.

Design an isolated or raft footing in 30 minutes

  1. Import. From ETABS: File → Export → Story as SAFE .f2k (base storey) — column reactions come with load cases.
  2. Soil. Define soil subgrade: modulus of subgrade reaction, e.g. 12,000–25,000 kN/m³ for medium-dense soil (from your SPT / plate load test).
  3. Draw footings. Draw slabs (footings) under columns with thickness 450–600 mm; or a raft over the whole area.
  4. Run. Analyse; check soil pressure ≤ allowable bearing capacity, punching shear ratio < 1 and strip moments.
  5. Reinforcement. Design → Slab design: read required As per strip, choose bars (e.g. #5 @ 150 mm both ways).

Values are typical teaching values — always use the loads, materials and codes of your actual project.
