About this calculator
Enter your wall length, height and thickness to get the number of bricks, the cement bags and sand for the mortar, and the cost at today's prices. Doors and windows are deducted and a wastage allowance is added, the way our site engineers estimate brickwork.
How it's calculated
- Masonry volume (cft) = (length × height − openings) × thickness
- Bricks = volume × 13.5 bricks per cft (9″ × 4½″ × 3″ bricks)
- Wet mortar = 0.25 cft per cft of masonry; dry mortar = wet × 1.33
- Cement bags = dry mortar × cement share ÷ 1.25 cft per bag
How many bricks are in 100 sq ft of 9″ wall?
About 1,010 bricks plus wastage (100 sq ft × 0.75 ft × 13.5).
Which mortar ratio should I use?
1:6 is usual for 9″ load-bearing and partition walls in houses; 1:4 for 4½″ walls and damp areas.
