Earthquake-Safe House Tips for Azad Kashmir

AJK is in a high seismic zone. Practical design and construction tips to make your house safer in an earthquake.

Why it matters

The 2005 earthquake showed that most collapses came from weak columns, poor steel detailing and heavy roofs on brick walls. Mirpur, Kotli, Bagh and Muzaffarabad are all in high seismic zones of the Building Code of Pakistan (Seismic Provisions).

Design

Get a structural design for your exact house — beams and columns sized for earthquake forces, not copied from a neighbour. Keep the plan simple and regular; avoid big overhangs and floating columns.

Steel details

Stirrups with 135° hooks, closer stirrups near beam-column joints, enough lap length, and bars anchored into the footing. These details cost little and save lives.

Materials and workmanship

Proper concrete strength, no extra water, good curing, Grade 60 steel that is not underweight. Tie brick walls to the columns.

Existing houses

If you plan to add a floor, have the structure checked first. Ask an engineer — send us photos of the columns and beams.
